Kingston (Jamaica), July 3: Millions may have been rooting for Rahul Dravid and company in front of their television sets at home but a handful of Indian supporters were the most boisterous at the Sabina Park on Sunday as India won their first series in the Caribbean since 1971.
As West Indian wickets fell, the Indians congregated in the section close to the playing area, waved tri-colours and hooted. Chants of jeetey ga bhai jeetey ga, Iiiiiindia jeetey ga and "East or west, India is the best" rent the air much to the discomfort of the West Indians.
They were also involved in friendly banter as the Jamaicans tried to make the most of an odd boundary scored.
The Bharat Army or the Mauj Fauj also gave a full-throated rendition of the national anthem Jana gana mana to pump up their heroes on the ground.
"It feels really nice to see our team do so well here. We are thrilled to be part of it," said a beaming Anil Kumar, a doctor.
Purnima was among the patriots who waved the Indian tri-colour vigorously through Sunday and was overjoyed on the emphatic win. "This is my team and am proud of being an Indian," she said.
"Being so far away from home, it gives us so much joy just like it must be for our countrymen back in India. You crave for moments like these in a foreign land and Dravid’s team has given us a big reason to party," student Surender Shinde said.
By contrast, the ever-involved and knowledgeable West Indian cricket fans were furious with Brian Lara and the team. "Maan, this is the end of West Indies cricket. I mean them guys just can’t play the ball like it should be. They swingin bat wildly like a baseball club when they should be playing straight on a wicket like this," said a depressed Devon.
Veteran Wicky Watford looked as if he would break down. "They just can’t play cricket. I have watched so many good matches here but this one is a mess," he said as he swung his head.
Along with the series, West Indies cricket also lost a die-hard fan on Sunday. Winston Simon, who was screaming suggestions at the players from the stands right through the three days of play, had this to say at the end of the match: "This is a ridiculous performance. I am not going to come back to the Sabina Park again."
