Ton-up Saha, Ganguly script Bengal win

BY OUR CORRESPONDENT

KOLKATA, Feb. 17: A mature 102 not out by Wriddhiman Saha led Bengal to a second successive comprehensive victory in the Vijay Hazare inter-state East Zone one-dayers at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday. Saha’s controlled aggression enabled the hosts surpass Assam’s challenging total of 269/8 for the loss of just two wickets with as many as four overs and three balls to spare.

Initially, Saha was quite happy playing second fiddle to rookie Avishek Banerjee who took on the Assam bowlers to notch up his maiden half-century. The duo added 98 for the first wicket before Avishek was adjudged lbw off Arlen Konwar for 68.

Coming at one-down, Sourav Ganguly then amassed 136 with Saha for the second wicket to put the visitors out of the contest. The southpaw in an ideal preparation for the upcoming IPL slammed 64 off just 62 balls with six boundaries and a couple of sixes.

Earlier, Bengal’s toothless bowling allowed Assam to post a total in excess of 250 despite being reduced to 92/4 in 24 overs. Sib Sankar Roy’s 111 and a breezy 79 by Deepak Sharma propelled the Assam innings.

PTI adds from Dharamsala, Virat Kohli hit an unbeaten century, while Ashish Nehra claimed a hat-trick to help Delhi defeat Punjab by seven wickets. Chasing a target of 205 in 50 overs, Delhi scored 205 for the loss of just three wickets in 38.5 overs.
