Mumbai, March 21: Caught in a catch-22 situation, the Indian Premier League and the Board of Control for Cricket in India have called for an emergency working committee meeting to decide on the IPL’s fate, here on Sunday.
In an informal meeting with former BCCI president Sharad Pawar, current BCCI president Shashank Manohar and secretary N. Srinivasan, IPL chairman and Commissioner Lalit Modi had a briefing session prior to the emergency meet.
"We will discuss the IPL schedule at the working committee meeting scheduled tomorrow," Modi said. The IPL chairman is also expected to meet all the franchise owners in the afternoon.
There has been a furore in certain states about the non-provision of central paramilitary forces for the IPL matches due to the general elections to be held in the country, which has raised a question mark even about the event happening.
With the given situation of a packed schedule there are likely to be occasions when there could be upto three matches held on a single day in the states that are willing to provide security for the event. IPL officials, however, feel that a truncated version of the tournament is unlikely. "We are ready for any eventuality, and have 42 different schedules prepared. Everything will be discussed and finalised at the meeting tomorrow," Modi said.
The IPL schedule is likely to be finalised early next week with the Union home minister P. Chidambaram travelling to Chennai this weekend, even as the central government waits for written feedback from the states slated to host the IPL matches with only two having responded so far. Meanwhile, Modi rubbished the Rajasthan government’s allegations about deliberately shifting the Rajasthan Royals’ matches out of the state, saying the accusations made were baseless.
