'Only Kiwis can win'

Napier, March 29: New Zealand may have had a hard day in the field, conceding 205 runs for just one wicket on Sunday but coach Andy Moles has no complaints.

"There is still only one team turning up tomorrow that can win this Test match and that is New Zealand. It is not often that we have been in that position," Moles said after the fourth day’s play.

"We hope tomorrow a little bit of luck goes our way and we get the opportunity to push to the win that we deserve. Obviously, draw would be the favourite but it only takes a couple of good catches and a special spell by somebody. If we can get our intensity right and hit the right areas... all we are looking for is two or three mistakes and we are into the tail. As we saw in the first innings, they have got a magnificent five or six at the front. After that if we bowl well and things go our way we can get quick wickets," the Kiwi coach added.

Moles said his bowlers had taken a beating. "They are sore but there are no injuries. Obviously you are a bit tired when you make teams follow-on. Good teams spend a lot of time in the field and so my message to the team is that we’ve got to get used to it. If we are going to become a good Test side it is about getting big scores and then making teams follow-on. They are in good spirits. They would have liked to have got one or two successes during the day. But tomorrow is another day," he said.

He is not complaining though. "I couldn’t ask anymore. They have come in and hit the wicket hard in the areas and bowled in good areas for long periods of time. The Indians put in some 205 today in a matter of 90 overs," he said.

Moles thought the pitch was too good for the batsmen. "Everybody admits that it is an exceptional batting wicket, and they’ve got some great players who played well on it. It is very, very hard. It is very difficult to see any wear and tear on this surface."

We can play another five days on it and it will still be a good wicket. If we are looking for mistakes from the batters, it is when the ball misbehaves on the last day, as we normally would like to see on a really good Test wicket," he said.

"But they (the Indians) played well and showed good discipline. We have also shown exceptional discipline with our bowling attack. There were no chances in the field," he concluded.
