New Delhi, March 21: One of the biggest losers in the Indian Premier League’s constant chopping and changing of schedules has been the national capital Delhi. Delhi, along with Jaipur, was one of two venues to be completely omitted from 2009 IPL schedule.
However, GMR owned IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils will look to continue their efforts to secure Delhi as one of the venues for the second edition of the IPL, when the franchise owners meet the IPL governing council in Mumbai on Sunday. The Daredevils stand to lose a hefty amount in ticket sales if their home matches are moved out of the Ferozeshah Kotla. The amount could be to the tune of Rs 5 crore, which was approximately the revenue generated from tickets last season.
"We’ll definitely ask the IPL to consider their decision about dropping Delhi from the list of venues. The financial losses for us, if the matches are shifted out of Delhi, are too high to count at the moment," Daredevils CEO Amrit Mathur told this newspaper.
"The IPL plans to inform the franchises on the road map ahead when we meet in Mumbai tomorrow," he added. IPL had no choice but to drop Delhi as one of the venues after Delhi Police commissioner Y.S. Dadwal made it clear last week that the state was not prepared to take any risk looking at the current security scenario.
Daredevils, however, are still trying their best to salvage the situation as they met all the concerned authorities including state chief minister Shiela Dikshit.
