Teams look to rework deals

New Delhi, March 25: With the problem surrounding the Indian Premier League’s venue for 2009 out of the way, it’s now time for the franchisees to bring out their calculators to plan for their five-week sojourn to South Africa.

IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has already sounded a warning that the event is bracing up for losses of about Rs 200 crores from its second edition, brought on by the shift out of India.

The franchisees are still in the dark how their losses are going to be minimised by the IPL. "We are waiting for the IPL governing council members to come back from South Africa and speak to us. We are not sure what kind of subsidies the IPL plans on offering us and the picture will only be clear to us in a few days time," Deccan Chargers vice-president Venkat Reddy said.

Sources close to some of the other IPL franchises say that they are keen on re-negotiating some deals with the BCCI and IPL in view of the extra cost of shifting to South Africa. One of them could be IPL’s broadcasting deal. According to an IPL statement on the day, the amount now stands at Rs 8,200 crores for nine years against the earlier sum of Rs 5,000 crores for a 10-year period.

BCCI shares broadcasting fees in an 80:20 ratio in favour of team owners.

With the new WSG deal, the teams will get additional revenue of close to Rs 240 crore. If BCCI decides to forego its share of the broadcasting rights, franchisees would earn an additional Rs 60 crore."We will be speaking to the IPL to re-negotiate various deals including broadcast revenue sharing, as well as re-negotiating deals with the IPL’s sponsors which will be top-most on our agenda," a franchise owner said.

Meanwhile, the franchisees are also planning to cut down on pre-season camps as well as the number of players on the flight to South Africa to reduce costs.

"Bangalore Royal Challengers will only hold a camp in South Africa under Protean coach Ray Jennings next month but no camp will be held in India.

"Also we plan to announce a fresh list of players that will be travelling to South Africa in a few days," UB group spokesman Prakash Mirpuri said.

Deccan Chargers, however, said they would not trim their squad. "We have a small squad and don’t feel the need to prune it for travelling to South Africa.

"We also plan to hold a camp with the Indian players starting on March 29 and another one in SA from April 8 or 9," Reddy said.
