Mumbai Guillotined

By K. MOSES

Mumbai, April 27: After lying low for three matches, the Deccan Chargers came out in full force on Sunday to maul Mumbai Indians and record their first win of the IPL tournament at the DY Patil Stadium here.

After restricting the home side to a modest 154/7, the Chargers made mockery of the Mumbai total courtesy Adam Gilchrist’s savage 47-ball 109 not out to overhaul the target in just 12.4 overs without losing a wicket. Laxman remained unbeaten on 37 from 26 balls, five of which he despatched to the fence and one over it.

The win took DC from eighth to sixth on the points table, which has Bangalore and Mumbai languishing at the bottom.

Gilchrist exploded like a dynamite, cracking 10 soaring sixes and nine boundaries to batter the Mumbai bowlers, in the process recording the fastest century in Twenty20 cricket (42 balls). The previous fastest hundred, off 47 balls, was set by Gilly’s teammate Andrew Symonds during the Chargers’ last game against Rajasthan Royals at home last week.

The Australian was in sizzling form, striking the ball clean and long from the very beginning to take the game away from Mumbai, whose stand-in captain Shaun Pollock shuffled the bowling pack regularly without much success. With Gilly on fire smashing sixes at will, all the Mumbai fielders could do was fetch the ball from the fence.

He made his intention clear, pulling seamer Ashish Nehra over square leg for the first boundary on the second ball of the innings before punching him through the covers to double the effect. In the next over, the Aussie dished out similar treatment to South African speedster Shaun Pollock, leading the Mumbai Indians on the day, crashing him through the on-side.

Gilly brought up his half-century, hooking Pollock into the stands and followed it with two more sixes and a four as Mumbai began to sink. He brought up his century in style, carting Abhishek Nayar for three sixes in the 10th over of the innings.

The man of the match was modest. "I played according to my instinct," Gilchrist said, before giving credit to the bowlers. "They did a good job of restricting Mumbai, which made it easy for the batsmen."

Laxman collected runs at his own pace, employing his wrists to send the ball cruising to the boundary to play perfect second fiddle.

Earlier, R.P. Singh turned in an economical spell and covered up fielding lapses by his teammates as the Chargers restricted the home side to a modest total.

Luke Ronchi turned RP off the hips for the first boundary on the second ball of the innings but left-arm seamer Nuwan Zoysa, who came in for Chaminda Vaas, pinned the Australian on the backfoot with a mixture of deliveries, including one that rose sharply and went past his nose. That put enough pressure on the Aussie, who gave away his wicket, cutting RP straight to Laxman at first slip for 13.

as Mumbai lost their first wicket with just 15 on board. It was 18/2 when Ajinkya Rahane was felled by Sanjay Bangar.

Introduced as early as in the sixth over, Shahid Afridi bowled his leg-spinners to great effect, claiming the wickets of the dangerous Robin Uthappa and Sanath Jayasuriya as Mumbai slipped to 55/4 in the 11th over. It would have been worse had umpire Suresh Shastri upheld, or referred to the third umpire, a full throated leg before wicket appeal by Shahid Afridi against Abhishek Nayar.

The lucky batsman made a useful 34 off 19 balls and put on an innings-building 43 runs for the sixth wicket with West Indian Dwayne Bravo, who contributed 34 after Mumbai were gasping at 79/5 in the 14th over.

Pollock was the other big contributor, making a run-a-ball 31 which contained three fours and a six.
