Port Elizabeth, April 20: If the inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League was all about unheralded youngsters coming to the fore and making a mark, IPl-2 in its brief stint in South Africa is fast turning out to be the playgrounds of the old warriors.
After Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid proved that age was more in the mind having set up their sides’ wins on the opening day of the Twenty20 event, it was the turn of Matthew Hayden at Port Elizabeth on Monday.
The recently-retired Australian powerhouse cracked a blistering 65 to help Chennai Super Kings post a massive 92-run win over Bangalore Royal Challengers in their IPL match here on Monday.
Hayden combined with Parthiv Patel (30, 41b) in a 109-run opening stand that carried the side to 179/5 in 20 overs — the highest score in this edition so far. In chase, Bangalore threatened to make a fight of it early on with contributions from Jacques Kallis and Robin Uthappa, but later fizzled out, ending up with a meagre 87 in 15.1 overs.
Earlier, Chennai began on a rollicking note with Hayden and Patel going after the opposition bowlers from the word go. The duo breezed away to 50 runs in just 29 balls with 20 runs coming from the fifth over bowled by Jacques Kallis.
Scores: Chennai Super Kings 179/5 in 20 overs (Hayden 65, Patel 30; Praveen 2/37) beat Bangalore Royal Challengers 87 in 15.1 overs (Kallis 24, Uthappa 20; Muralitharan 3/11)
