Cape Town, April 23: The Indian Premier League went into unknown territory with the "super over" at Newlands on Thursday night after the Kolkata Knight Riders-Rajasthan Royals game had ended with scores level at 150 each. Batting first RR had scored 150/6 to which KKR replied with 150/8.
In the "super over" or bowl-out, Yusuf Pathan sealed the deal for the defending champions with two huge sixes off Ajantha Mendis to overhaul KKR’s earlier "super over" score of 15 posted by Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum.
Earlier Sourav Ganguly (46, 30b, 4x4, 2x6) had taken KKR to the threshold of an unlikely win but threw it away with two runs needed off as many deliveries when he was caught behind off left-arm rookie pacer Kamran Khan. Ishant Sharma scrambled a single to tie the scores but was run-out while going for a second run, taking the issue into the bowl-out.
Ganguly put on a 49-run partnership with IPL new face Yashpal Singh (20) for the sixth wicket to see the Knight Riders close in on the target after a flier at the top by Chris Gayle.
Scores: RR 150/6 (Pathan 42) bt KKR 150/8 (Ganguly 46, Gayle 41) in "super over" bowl-out.
