CENTURION, April 29: The near three-hour practice session of the Deccan Chargers was an indication to how much this team wants to build on their good start. The hunger was evident as each member of the side went though with the paces with glee. The match against the Delhi Daredevils here on Thursday is another opportunity for the Chargers to move closer towards the knockout slot.
Skipper Adam Gilchrist speaking to this newspaper said "There has been no let up in intensity and the session today had more to do with what we have started to expect of ourselves. The boys took a day off yesterday and they thoroughly deserved it. We were back in business today and I am happy with the way our preparation went." Delhi have have six points from their four games and will be under pressure against Chargers who have not put a foot wrong in the tournament. Gilchrist agreed Virender Sehwag's men will be coming hard after their loss against to Rajasthan Royals.
"Every game in the competition is a challenge. As far as our strategy goes it will not be entirely different from what we have adopted thus far. There are areas we have to keep track in relation to specific opponents," explained Gilchrist.
Deccan Chargers are on top of the points table at the moment but there is little to take out of that, according to Gilchrist. "It does not guarantee us anything tomorrow. From the start we have not been overtly worried by the result. It is a matter of how we go about our own game. I cannot really predict results but we will have to start afresh and continue to do the good work we have done so far," said Gilchrist.
The last two games saw the spinners write the script for the Chargers. Gilchrist who has played enough experience in South Africa will know the role of the spinner could be limited from now. "The air here is thin and the ball flies. The dew factor also comes into play and it does get difficult to grip the ball during the night games.
"The spinners could get eliminated quickly here. Luckily we are playing a day game and we can reserve our worries on dew for later."
Having come away from the coast teams will have to recast their strategies. Batting against the new ball is not going to be easy as the wind can help the ball dart around disconcertingly. Both Rajasthan and Delhi found it out the tough way. Even gentle seamers will have to be given their due in these conditions. But once a batsman gets his eye in runs are available in plenty on these flat decks. Gilchrist promised there would be no wholesome changes to the team that defeated Chennai Super Kings. "Every change that we have made till now has worked well for us. I am not ruling out a change at the same time.
"There is so much talent to choose from and I am sure we will alter the side after taking a final look at the wicket before the match. The sun should dry the wicket nicely and I expect a run filled game," he added.
