Johannesburg, April 21: The journey of R.P. Singh has been an enigmatic one. The ever smiling medium pacer who has had a part to play in some notable Indian victories abroad has also seen his career graph slip a bit in the last season.
The Indian Premier League for many is a vehicle to plot a comeback to the national side for the World T20. The left-armer though does not want to think too much about national selection and would rather concentrate on the job ahead with the Deccan Chargers in the IPL.
"It is for the selectors to decide. My job is to get wickets and remain fit. My priorities at the moment are strictly with the Chargers and being a part of a winning team. We have had a great start to our campaign and it is crucial we continue in the same mode," said R.P. during a chat with this newspaper.
Along with Fidel Edwards, Singh struck a deadly combination with the new ball that pushed Kolkata Knighr Riders out of the game, where a definite plan was evident.
"A lot of hard thinking has gone into our plan for each batsman. The light wind and overnight rains helped movement through the air. A swing bowler cannot ask for more. I am happy we struck to the right length with the new ball. In T20 even one bad over can change the complexion of a game," explained R.P. on Chargers’ success.
Wednesday’s contest against Bangalore Royal Challengers should be an exciting affair and R.P. will have a crucial role to play. The pressure is squarely on BRC following their loss to Chennai on Monday. The wicket of Kevin Pietersen will be the one Chargers will be hoping for and R.P. cannot wait for the contest. "We cannot take them lightly. They are a balanced side and it should be a close match. As far as KP goes we all know what a class act he is. I have had some success against him during the 2007 tour where I managed to get him out three or four times, I just hope the magic continues."
With the international stars leading from the front, the Chargers are on the right track. The week long training camp in Pretoria made all the difference according to R.P. "We trained hard there, got to know each other better and the bonding was fantastic. We were moulded as one strong unit.
"If I say there is less pressure then I am lying. As cricketers we have to take it," he said.
