Cape Town, April 24: Still reeling from the Rajasthan Royals’ ‘super-over’ blow, Kolkata Knight Riders will face Chennai Super Kings in their next Indian Premier League match here on Saturday.
IPL-2 has been a rollercoaster ride for the KKR side. After a shaky start with the defeat against Deccan Chargers, the Knight Riders bounced back in their next game against Kings XI Punjab with Chris Gayle orchestrating a comprehensive victory.
John Buchanan’s boys, however, could not maintain the tempo and were pipped at the post by the Royals in a see-saw encounter here on Thursday night.
In Durban, Chennai Super Kings looked good to chase down the highest score of the tournament faltering towards the end to a resurgent Delhi Daredevils.
On paper, Kolkata have a devastating opening combination but while Gayle has lived up to expectations with blistering knocks in the last two matches, skipper Brendon McCullum (1, 21, 3) hasn’t quite managed to do justice to his talent.
The middle-order also looks lacklustre with Brad Hodge, Laxmi Ratan Shukla and Moises Henriques struggling for form.
The Knight Riders, however, will take heart from Sourav Ganguly’s form, especially after the former skipper’s gutsy 46 on Thursday which took them close to victory.
Chennai, on the other hand, have no such problems with the opening pair where Matthew Hayden is in red-hot form and Parthiv Patel is playing second fiddle. Down the order, Suresh Raina is also in good nick.
Andrew Flintoff, the most expensive player in the CSK roster, will miss out on the rest of the tournament with a knee injury.
It is a big blow to Chennai, even though Flintoff hadn’t clicked for them so far.
