Kings steal last-ball thriller

By Sunit Kaul

Mumbai, May 21: Mumbai Indians' winning streak was cut short on Wednesday by Kings XI Punjab, who stole a dramatic one-run victory off the last ball in their Indian Premier League rematch at the Wankhede Stadium here on Wednesday.

Chasing 189 to win after a strong batting performance from the Mohali team, the hosts began with a bang, but then lost the plot in the death overs, with their last six wickets falling for just 29 runs, mostly to run-outs.

Needing 19 to win off the final over, Siddharth Chitnis did the tough part first, carting a six off a V.R.V. Singh no-ball over third man and then following it up with a four. With Mumbai now needing eight off five, Chitnis was run-out the next delivery, putting them at a precarious 182/8.

That dismissal changed everything and the hosts were left to depend on the tail. Five runs were scored off the next three balls with Ashish Nehra getting run-out in the process.

Vikrant Yeligati faced the final ball with his team requiring a further two. He mistimed the drive, but ran hard for the single anyway. Yuvraj Singh, though, was up in a flash at mid-off and broke the stumps diving full stretch with the batsman inches short of his ground. The run-out signalled the win, giving Yuvraj's team a spot in the semifinals along with Rajsathan Royals as a result.

At one stage, though, Mumbai looked certain to cross the finish line, courtesy Tendulkar. His 46-ball 65 with 12 hits to the fence guided the team till the 17th over. Kings XI bowlers sprayed the ball around early on, perhaps complacent in the comfort of the 180-run plus total their batsmen had set. Sreesanth went for 10 in his first over that included seven wides, clearly not able to control his line.

Tendulkar controlled the pace of the innings beautifully, looking to play down the ground rather than taking any unnecessary risks. His three boundaries in one over off V.R.V oozed class, and set the bar very high for the other batsmen to follow. However his run-out, when Robin Uthappa sent him back, proved to be the turning point.

The Mumbai team would also feel hard done by some umpiring decisions that did not go their way.

Dwayne Smith, who came in as Dwane Bravo's replacement, was adjudged run-out by the third umpire Suresh Shastri even though he looked to have made his ground. In the Kings XI innings as well, Shaun Pollock's direct throw from long-on seemed to have found Luke Pomersbach short, but the TV umpire ruled in favour of the batsman.

Earlier, the Kings XI posted a competitive total after being asked to take first strike on a hot and humid day. The Mumbai bowlers toiled in unforgiving conditions with the perpetually consistent Marsh (81 not out) and Pomersbach (79) adding 134 runs for the second wicket. A few more runs could have easily come, but for bad shot selection from Yuvraj Singh and Mahela Jaywardene in the middle order.

However, Tendulkar seemed to have made the right call at the start when Shaun Pollock dismissed the dangerous James Hopes in his first over. Pollock has been a big factor for Mumbai Indians ever since his short captaincy stint and on Wednesday too he did not allow Kings XI top order to cut loose against him.

Marsh and Pomersbach took their time and used the powerplay overs to get their bearings right rather than launch a brutal assault. At 43/1 in six overs, things seemed to be going according to plan for the hosts.

Once set, though, the duo did not spare against any bowler in their strokeplay. Local off-spinners Yelligati and Chitnis, who were expected to use the turn in the track, gave away more than 80 in their combined eight overs. The off-colour Nehra fared no better, accounting for 34 in his three overs.

Marsh eventually holed out to Pollock off Chitnis trying to go for his fifth six in the 15th over, but Pomersbach continued from where he left off. The last five overs produced 55 runs courtesy his late blast despite the fact that Yuvraj Singh and Mahela Jayawardene failed to fire at the other end.
