Johannesburg, May 3: On a day of superlative performances, top South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis and India discard Robin Uthappa shone the brighest as they helped Royal Challengers Bangalore to a nine-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in their eighth IPL match here on Thursday.
Kallis (69 n.o) and Robin Uthappa (66 n.o) ran amok against a hapless Mumbai bowling line-up, racking up a massive 126-run stand for the second wicket to set up the side’s fourth win. They finished at 150/1 in 18.1 overs, in reply to Mumbai Indians’s 149/4 in 20 overs. Bangalore now have eight points from eight games.
Dwayne Bravo and Sanath Jayasuriya had earlier put up a similar willow-wielding show for Mumbai, each posting quicker than run-a-ball fifties.
Such was Kallis’ domination with the bat that he almost overshadowed Challengers’ debutant Dillon du Preez impressive show early on, who took 3/32 and restricted Mumbai to under 150.
Earlier, bolstered by the return of Rahul Dravid, RCB managed to restrict the Indians down to 149/4 after Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and elected to bat. Sanath Jayasuriya (52, 43b, 1x6s, 6x4s) and Dwayne Bravo (50, 40 balls) gave Mumbai the much needed momentum following du Preez’s early strikes.
Scores: Mumbai Indians 149/4 (S. Jayasuriya 52, D. Bravo 50 n.o., A. Nayar 29 n.o.; D. du Preez 3/32) lost to Bangalore Royal Challengers 150/1 (J. Kallis 69 not out, R. Uthappa 66 not out; Zaheer 1/12)
