East London, May 8: One over from Sachin Tendulkar was the difference between his Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils at the Buffalo Park in East London here on Friday. Delhi's seven-wicket win mustered by AB de Villiers (50, 38b) saw them back atop the league table and Mumbai a step closer to an early exit.
Chasing a small but testing 117 on a slow and low pitch, Delhi were tied down by the off-spin of Harbhajan Singh and J.P. Duminy.
On their insistence, Tendulkar took the ball with Delhi needing in excess of eight runs per over, and by the time de Villiers was done, 19 runs had come off the over, and Delhi were firmly back in the driver’s seat with the batsman taking a sequence of 4, 6, 4, dot, 4 and 1.
Openers David Warner and Gautam Gambhir put on 42 to launch the chase before de Villiers saw them home with Dinesh Karthik after putting on a vital 61 for the third wicket with Tillekaratne Dilshan (17). In the end, the result was achieved with seven balls in hand.
Earlier, the Mumbai Indians never recovered from a horror start to be bowled out for 116. Daredevils paceman Dirk Nannes bowled a dream first over as openers Luke Ronchi and Duminy walked back with ducks to their names.
Ronchi, replacing Sanath Jayasuriya in this match, was run out while local lad Duminy, who has been the most consistent batsman till now for Mumbai Indians, edged Nannes to wicketkeeper Karthik for nought as the side slipped to 1/2 in the first over.
Tendulkar looked in fine nick after dropping down to number 4 but was run-out for 15 off 14 balls to dash Mumbai’s hopes of a competitive total. West Indian all-rounder Dwayne Bravo (35, 30b, 2x4s, 2x6s) gave some respectability to the innings.
For the Daredevils, Nannes was once again the pick of the bowlers with 2/33, although he came in for some punishment in his second spell at the hands of Bravo. Delhi all-rounder Rajat Bhatia picked up 3/15 towards the end as Mumbai ran out of steam.
Scores: Mumbai Indians 116 in 20 overs (D. Bravo 35; R. Bhatia 3/15, A. Nehra 2/27, D. Nannes 2/33) lost to Delhi Daredevils 118/3 in 18.5 overs (de Villiers 50 not out, Warner 21, Duniny 1/15, Harbhajan 1/21) by 7 wkts.
