Johannesburg, May 2: Chennai Super Kings put up a scintillating display to spoil Delhi Daredevils’ chances of moving into the lead of the second edition of the Indian Premier League. Unheralded 28-year-old left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati of Goa was the star for the Super Kings, picking up 4/24 as they beat the Daredevils by 18 runs.
Chasing 164 to win, the Daredevils looked on course for a win while Australian David Warner (51, 40b, 1x6s, 5x4s) and Dinesh Karthik (52, 31b, 1x6s, 7x4s) were at the crease. It was Jakati who broke their 74-run fourth-wicket partnership, getting Warner stumped to bring the Super Kings back into the match and then forced Karthik to sky the ball to Muralitharan at square-leg.
The Daredevils could only manage 145/8 in 20 overs in reply to Super Kings’ total of 163.
Jakati produced the ball of the match to dismiss in-form Sri Lankan batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan with the ball pitching on leg-stump and turning just enough to beat his defensive bat to hit the middle-stump.
But it was paceman Sudeep Tyagi who did the early damage for the Super Kings. Tyagi dismissed Daredevils’ skipper Gautam Gambhir for 13 with Suresh Raina plucking off a sensational catch at point.
Scores: Chennai Super Kings 163 in 20 overs (S. Badrinath 45, S. Raina 32, D. Nannes 3/27, A. Nehra 3/27) bt Delhi Daredevils 145/8 in 20 overs (D. Karthik 52, D. Warner 51, S. Jakati 4/24, S. Tyagi 2/18).
