Centurion, May 20: If anyone had suggested to the Deccan Chargers or the Royal Challengers Bangalore that they would be involved in a match to decide a semi-final placings on the last day of the league stage, they would have gladly taken it. The two had a horrendous run in 2008 but have picked up the pieces well here to remain in contention.
The paths taken have been different. Chargers blasted off the blocks, had a momentary blip only to get on track again. Bangalore on the other hand have recovered from a poor start to be where they are today. The one factor that is a common thread to both is an inspiring leader lifting them. Anil Kumble and Adam Gilchrist have been simply outstanding.
Looking back, the Chargers will be relieved despite a spate of negative results. As many as four matches were lost in the final over, but that now becomes redundant as with Kings XI Punjab and Rajastha Royals both losing on Wednesday, it is all but certain that both the Chargers and Bangalore will now go through to the semifinals.
"Without doubt, poor decisions at the wrong time could have cost us. We would have been naturally happy to have got through. What it means is we have another important match to play and I am sure all the hard work we have put in over a period of time will show tomorrow," said Chargers coach Darren Lehmann.
Chargers could burn some midnight oil in finalising their XI for this game. Lehmann confirmed that Ravi Teja will miss the match. The youngster will be out of action for 40 days after tearing a hamstring during the match against Kings XI. "We will have to sit on that. Azhar Bilhakia or V.V.S. Laxman will come in place of Ravi," said Lehmann.
The wicket here promises runs. The surface looks hard and with a fair covering of grass. The batsmen should enjoy the ball coming on nicely to the bat. Harris has done his cause no harm but the experience of Vaas cannot be discounted. The form of Herschelle Gibbs and his approach in the last match has left a lot to be desired and his place could be taken by an all-rounder.
The Challengers are peaking at the right moment while the Chargers have not had things going to plan. There are areas the Chargers will have to pay attention to quickly. Harmeet Singh has proved to be easy fodder while Jaskiran Singh who made his debut in the last match did not get to bowl. To be up against an improving side is not going to be easy for the Chargers with a limited attack.
"It is going to be a very tough game. They have played some good cricket of late and we are aware of it. But there is no time to worry on whom we are playing against at this stage of the tournament. We will continue to do what we can to the best our abilities," said Lehmann.
In a number of games in this late stage of the tournament, setting a target has proved to be a better proposition, as pressure can play a part during a stiff chase.
The stage is set for a cracking contest between two sides that are well balanced. Bangalore will start with their nose in front but not by much. It will all boil down to who enjoys a better start.
There is no threat of rain. And with a true wicket to boot the setting is perfect to provide the perfect end to the league stage that has provided some exciting cricket.
