JOHANNESBURG, May 25: A crestfallen Anil Kumble was not a happy man at the Wanderers on Sunday. Having done everything possible to put his team on top and yet ended up on the losing side for no fault of his. This is a cruel world that does not remember the runner-up, but his four-wicket haul will be etched in the memory for long.
For a player who always put his team first, Kumble would have been too happy to exchange his man of the match award for a win. The Bangalore skipper shared his thoughts on the tournament and the final. Excerpts:
On the final loss: To lose in any final obviously hurts. But I think 143 was gettable on this track with our batting line-up. We were cruising but I think those two wickets in two balls didn’t help our cause. I think we should have had a partnership going. It is really disappointing. But if you look at the whole tournament I think the way we bounced back to reach the final was really incredible.
On the last over: We can’t really expect the game to go to the last over and with 15 runs required we obviously needed a couple of sixes. I think it is a part of the game and we lost too many wickets going into the last over. And that is what happened. Full credit to Deccan Chargers for the way they played today.
On the impact of Ray Jennings: He has brought a lot of experience and local knowledge. The boys have rallied around him. I would also like to thank the coaching staff. We had a good bunch and we worked really hard to reach this far, but having said that I must say that nobody gave us a chance to play in the final with Deccan Chargers.
On what sparked RCB’s turnaround: No rocket science really. It is just that you try and encourage everyone to go out there and enjoy. That is the beauty of T20. Someday it will come off and another time you look stupid. So, we encouraged everyone to go out there and enjoy.
