Mumbai, May 23: The second edition of the Indian Premier League is drawing to a close and the event has been a huge success with not a single logistical glitch for any of the eight franchisees.
"The most important thing was we managed all the eight venues centrally. So there was much better co-ordination. Everything was managed and when the players reached the venue everything was ready," said IPL commissioner Lalit Modi, who added that the tournament had been a huge success.
"Yes, it is a big success considering the fact that it was held outside India and that too at a very short notice after being denied security assurance by the Indian government," he said.
Modi may have changed the landscape of cricket with the IPL, but it should be remembered that at one point of time the Board of Control for Cricket in India was not in favour of the T20 format. "The BCCI initially refused to play T20 cricket," former ICC president Ehasan Mani said. Speaking from London, he said, "The BCCI president at that time was Sharad Pawar. We discussed the matter and in the larger interest of the game and the ICC, although he had some reservations, he graciously agreed to change India’s stand of refusing to play T20 cricket."
