JOHANNESBURG, May 20: The terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore has raised a huge question mark over the safety of players in Pakistan. The recent decision by the ICC to pull the 2011 World Cup out of Pakistan only strengthened players’ apprehensions of touring there. Richard Pybus, who coached Pakistan for two terms, however noted the country was still safe for cricket.
Pybus, presently coach of the Nashua Titans spoke at an event held to mark the announcement of the Titans’ strategic tie-up between with the Delhi Daredevils. Excerpts:
On his time in Pakistan: I never feared for my life in Pakistan. I always enjoyed my stay there. They are wonderful people. I spoke with Saeed (Anwar) recently and he said that people have been brainwashed and it is sad because it reflects on the country.
On going back to Pakistan: I will go for sure. And this is only from a personal front. From a cricketing point, they have issues to be resolved. It’s got to be absolutely safe for any touring side. It is quite a turbulent political time at the moment. And issues that happened are a reflection of that.
On his stints with the Pakistan team: I enjoyed my time with the team. My last stint was pretty tough, from 2002 to the 2003 World Cup. It was a period of transition. The World Cup was a huge disappointment. I loved working with the players. World cricket need a strong Pakistan. I am sure they can deal with the issues relating to terrorists.
On the fear factor after the Lahore attack: I was filled with disbelief. It was like watching a movie. It was pure horror. I met Chaminda Vaas when he was with Middlesex. He said it was surreal and very difficult to come to terms with.
On Pakistan playing in neutral venues: The ICC will have something in place. Yorkshire is willing to host Test matches for Pakistan and that is a good sign. They have a strong relationship with UAE and that could come in handy. But at some point they have to get cricket back in Pakistan. It is a country where people are crazy about the game.
