London, June 20: Sri Lanka rode on a dashing knock by Tillakeratne Dilshan to thrash the West Indies in the second semifinal of the World Twenty20 Championship at The Oval here on Friday night. It will be an all-Asian affair as they take on Pakistan in the final.
Captain Chris Gayle was the lone ranger for the West Indies, making 63 not out in 50 balls but it was not enough as none of the other batsmen could even get into double figures. Chasing Lanka’s 158, the Caribbeans were bundled out for 101, thanks to a three-wicket burst in the first over by Angelo Mathews (3/16); Muttiah Muralitharan (3/29) and Ajantha Mendis, who returned with figures of 4-0-9-2.
Earlier, Dilshan cracked an unbeaten 96 in 57 balls to thump the highest score of the tournament. The Lankan opener too carried his bat to shore up his side which had slumped midway after losing three big wickets — those of Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara — for four runs in six balls between the 10th and 11th overs.
It had put the brakes on the Sri Lankan innings. However, Dilshan got together with Chamara Silva and Jehan Mubarak to raise 60 in the last five overs.
He needed a six off the final ball of the innings to become only the second batsman to score a century in T20 internationals behind Gayle but the West Indian denied him that pleasure by firing down a flat one which Dilshan could only pick a brace.
Scores: Sri Lanka 158/5 in 20 overs (T. Dilshan 96 not out, S. Jayasuriya 24; Bravo 2/32, Pollard 1/14) bt West Indies 101 in 17.3 overs (C. Gayle 63 not out; Mathews 3/16, Mendis 2/9, Muralitharan 3/29)
