'Opportunity to kill demons'

Age Correspondent

Chennai, June 26: Former India pacer Javagal Srinath does not want to read much into India’s defeat in the ICC World T20 championships. He is confident that his former colleagues will turn things around in West Indies.

"It is an opportunity for them to kill the demons quickly. If you look at the performance of the team over the last two years, they have had tremendous success. Things said and written about the team after two bad days were a bit harsh. I am sure they have it in them to win the series," said Srinath in a chat with this newspaper.

Srinath had suggested before the New Zealand tour that India lack an incisive third seamer. In addition to that, India will be missing the services of Zaheer Khan. But Srinath noted that the attack comprising of Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, R.P. Singh and Praveen Kumar can get the job done.

"India will miss the experience of Zaheer but Nehra will fill in. He was impressive in the IPL and importantly consistent in the death overs. As far as Ishant is concerned it is time for him to re-invent a bit. He needs all the support at this moment. It is not that he is bowling badly but he is not at his best," summed up Srinath.

The reason for India’s defeat in World T20 championships was attributed to too much cricket and the IPL by coach Gary Kirsten. Srinath joined Dennis Lillee in saying the IPL was not the cause for defeat.

"As far as the fatigue factor is concerned, I don’t buy it. I will agree if they are playing Test cricket.

"But T20 requires merely 80 minutes on the field. I am sure the players are fit enough to take that workload," said Srinath.

Welcoming the official tie-up between the MRF Pace foundation and the NCA, Srinath said: "The pace foundation has for long been a place of knowledge. Even during the fag end of my career I had something to learn here. I was wishing for this to happen for long. And it is now up to the young bowlers now to make the most of this association. Fast bowling is all about managing yourself well for extended spells and there is none better than Lillee to impart those skills," concluded Srinath.
