Mendis is SL’s charm: Sanga

London, June 20: Kumar Sangakkara’s Sri Lankans sprinted into the World Twenty20 Championships final with a 57-run rout of the West Indies but the captain is keeping his feet on the ground. He wants his side to go even better as they play Pakistan in the title round on Sunday.

"There is always scope for improvement in all departments of the game. When we think and be happy that everything is right then we make the first mistake. So it’s a constant search for improvement," he said after Lanka made 158 before bowling out the Caribbeans for 101.

Opener Tillakeratne Dilshan, whose unbeaten 96 was just five runs short of the West Indies’ total, served a warning to Pakistan as he spoke of a surprise innovative shot he has reserved for the final.

The Lankan credited the IPL for his dream run. "The IPL has been a great help for me. I played good cricket in South Africa for nearly two months. I have carried that form here into this tournament," Dilshan, who was consistent for the Delhi Daredevils said.

Mystery bowler Ajantha Mendis, who tied the West Indians down with figures of 4-0-9-2, drew special praise from his captain. "Mendis has won us enough games in this tournament to call him a great spinner in the T20 format. He is an absolute charm for us because the way he bowled in the middle overs and even in the first six overs. Even the Pakistan batsmen, who tend to play spin well, do not attack him that much because one slight mistake can get you out," Sangakkara cautioned.

The Sri Lankan skipper also talked highly of their bowling attack. "I think T20 is becoming more and more of a bowler’s game. Bowlers are understanding that this game is tailor-made for them too so that they can make a really big impact and win matches for their team," he said referring to his match-winners — Muttiah Muralitharan, Lasith Malinga, Mendis and and Angelo Mathews.

Sangakkara was also banking on the seasoned Sanath Jayasuriya when it came to batting. "He is always a big match player. As long as he is fit and performing he is welcome to the side. I am sure he is going to do something special on Sunday," Sangakkara said.

"Afridi is a guy who can take the game away from you in a few overs but we can’t really get caught up with just one player," he added.
