Test cricket on Yusuf radar

V. BALAJI

Chennai, July 24: One thing that Yusuf Pathan can’t stand, is being labelled a T20 specialist. The Indian middle-order batsman during an informal chat here said, each form of the game had a place and his dream as any cricketer was to do well in the longer version.

"Every player wants to do well in all the three formats. I am looking forward to Test cricket but I think it will take some time before it happens. I am training on a few specifics in relation to Test cricket," said Pathan.

The right-hander who played a pivotal role in Rajasthan Royals winning the inaugural IPL said all the formats would continue to enjoy a fan base and that Test cricket would continue to have its share of followers even with the growing interest in T20.

Pathan felt India had a good chance to win the 2009 Champions Trophy. "We are really looking forward to the Champions Trophy. We have been playing well as a unit and if we play to potential our chances will be bright."

The Indian team hit their lowest point in the T20 World Championship but it had nothing to do with the top-order’s inability to cope with the short ball according to Pathan. "A few things did not go our way and that can happen to any team. I am sure we will bounce back well."

The team under M.S. Dhoni redeemed themselves quickly by beating the West Indies 2-1 in the away ODI series that followed. It was India’s fifth successive ODI series triumph and only the second in the West Indies. Pathan complimented Dhoni’s captaincy and Gautam Gambhir for becoming the highest ranked Test batsman.

"Dhoni has been a positive influence. He is a fantastic captain who gets the best out of his players. His record as a skipper speaks for itself. As far as Gambhir is concerned, I was not at all surprised when he claimed the top spot. He has been doing consistently well and it was only a matter of time before he reached that spot," said Pathan.

As a parting shot Pathan said he learnt of brother Irfan Pathan’s marriage only from the media and that he was in no hurry to tie the knot.

"My parents will be looking for a bride. It is their job and they will do it. There is a time for everything. God will decide the time," added Pathan.
