CHENNAI, Aug. 23: New Zealand Cricket chief executive Justin Vaughan is in the city to support the Kiwi ‘A’ side who are taking part in the Buchi Babu all-India tournament. A doctor by profession, Vaughan took over as the NZC administrator two years back.
Addressing the media, Vaughan fielded a range of questions including the prospects of the Black Caps at the Champions Trophy. Excerpts:
On captain and coach acting as selectors: We have given it a try as we feel the new make-up will churn out desired results. In most countries, captains and coaches are consulted.
We wanted to go one step ahead and include them in the selection panel, which would give them the voting rights along with the other two selectors. Andy and Vettori work with the team all the time and that should help in picking the right combination.
On the Indian Premier League: The IPL has come in as a benefit. But in the process, a lot of players tend to play in all the matches due to obvious reasons. The IPL needs to be careful in deciding how much time it consumes in a year.
On NZ’s prospects in the Champions Trophy: We are a very good one-day side. In the past, we have done extremely well in South Africa.
