New Delhi, Aug. 24: The presence of India players Gautam Gambhir and Ishant Sharma at Delhi’s pre-season training camp on Monday did its bit in alleviating the uneasy tension between the 23 probables and the administrators, but behind the scenes, developments are continuing to unfold at rapid pace.
With a meeting set for Tuesday morning at Delhi and Districts Cricket Association president Arun Jaitley’s residence, both sides are hoping to find a middle ground.
While Virender Sehwag —who has been leading the revolt against the association alleging corruption and nepotism in selection procedures — is expected to attend the meeting with statemate Gambhir, Jaitley has formed a team of sorts to resolve the issue, comprising himself, DDCA general secretary S.P. Bansal and government nominee and MP Vibhakar Shastri.
Jaitley has, in fact, been quite particular in keeping the developments over the past week under wraps and except for Bansal and Shastri, even other executive members aren’t aware of how Jaitley plans to convince the Delhi skipper to stay put.
What has emerged however, is that while the DDCA president is looking to keep the India opener in Delhi at all costs, he is against the idea of rejigging the whole system — a situation other executive members aren’t too happy with.
"With Sehwag finally bringing up the issue in public, we thought Arun would be able to clean up the mess in the sports committee... but he isn’t too keen on changing things much," said an executive committee member. "Players have voiced their concerns to Jaitley in the past as well to, but not much has come out of it." After a similar outburst over the selection of a player two years ago, Jaitley had dissolved the selection panel for "bowing to pressure from sports committee members". The incident occurred next year as well and Jaitley had to intervene again to resolve the impasse.
"Jaitley is a pacifist and he would look to keep both sides happy," he added.
Delhi cricketers are however sure of a solution this time round and have seized the opportunity to mount pressure on DDCA officials.
One solution they’ve mooted is scrapping the sports committee altogether and replacing it with a "cricket committee" on the lines of the Mumbai Association where only former cricketers are allowed as members.
The final call will lie with Jaitley and that could well decide whether Sehwag stays or leaves to play for Haryana in this Ranji season.
