Lawson in race for IPL job

BIPIN DANI

Mumbai, Aug. 22: Former Pakistan coach Geoff Lawson is in demand again. Sacked by the Pakistan Cricket Board in 2008 after a string of poor performances, the Australian has now been approached by some Indian Premier League teams, it is learnt.

"A couple of IPL teams have spoken to me. Apparently experienced Australian coaches are still in demand, especially those who have had experience in Asia," Lawson told this paper from Sydney. He though refused to divulge the names of the IPL teams involved.

Despite the sackings of a few Australian coaches (Bennett King and John Dyson by the West Indies, Greg Chappell by India, John Buchanan by the Kolkata Knight Riders) in the last two years, Lawson insists Australian coaches are still the best in the business. "Teams change coaches regularly and it is quite a while since Greg Chappell was in India. John Dyson has been quite a successful coach in both Sri Lanka and the West Indies," he said.

Another successful Aussie, Buchanan said, "One thing about Australians is that we like challenges, and are prepared to take them head-on. As a consequence, such an approach results in casualties sometimes. However, Jamie Siddons (Bangladesh), Darren Lehmann (Deccan Chargers), Tom Moody (Kings XI), Greg Shipperd (Delhi Daredevils), and others who are involved with overseas provincial sides, would suggest that the we are still respected in the world of cricket."
