Mumbai, Sept. 2: An identical make-up to the composition of the sides, bound for two different tournaments looks very much on the cards, when the Kiran More-led five member selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India meet here on Sunday to pick up the teams for the upcoming Malaysian tri-series and the prestigious Champions Trophy to be held in India during the month of October-November.
The tri-series in Malaysia, featuring world champions Australia and West Indies, would mark the start of India’s new international season after the recent tour of Sri Lanka was disrupted by inclement weather.
With the weather having its say in Sri Lanka, denying any action, the selectors were denied the chance to assess the performance of a few players, who are yet to cement their position keeping the bigger picture in mind.
With teams for both the tournaments to be announced on the same day, the selectors are left with very little option of making wholesome changes, but to keep the composition of the side almost the same, with few minor changes here and there.
"See, it is difficult to say anything right now, but there can be minor changes in the team," hinted chairman of the selectors Kiran More. With the squad for the Champions Trophy to be pruned to 14, as per regulations laid down by the International Cricket Council, it looks that the selectors may select 16 or 17 players for the Malaysian tri-series.
Asked whether Indian seamer Zaheer Khan, who has been ignored for quite a long time can make it to the team, More said, "Zaheer may be considered in the meeting."
It is, however, learnt that Zaheer, who has been doing extremely well in the county circuit, playing for Worcestershire, may be selected this time around.
As far as proven match-winner, Anil Kumble (who was forced to cut short his stint with Surrey County Cricket Club after being diagnosed with tendonitis in his right shoulder) is concerned, the leggie’s inclusion will be subject to his fitness levels. "Kumble’s fitness report will be submitted by physio John Gloster during the meeting," said BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah.
With no major surprises expected, the point of interest would be once again regarding the uncertain future of the deposed India skipper Sourav Ganguly, who earlier made it the 30-man provisional squad for the Champions Trophy.
It is learnt that Ganguly will once again find it difficult to get back into the fold in what looks like a settled line-up.
