Kuala Lumpur, Sept. 24: Australia may have won the tri-nations tournament hands down but captain Ricky Ponting feels his side was still not at their best on Sunday. "It was a good result but I still don’t think we played our best cricket today," Ponting said after the match. Excerpts:
On his team: We always believed that any side we put on the field was good enough to win. For that fact it has not made it any more special at all. It’s nice coming out here and playing at a reasonable level after not having played at all. Looking back at the last two or three weeks, it has been very successful with the experimentation we have had.
On the match: It was a good result but I still don’t think we played our best cricket today. It was a bit difficult to judge with the way the wicket behaved. It’s been pretty difficult for all the batsman. We got a couple of good partnerships at the top and it allowed Symo (Andrew Symonds) and Huss (Michael Hussey) to play some shots in the end. We bowled very well early on and as I said the other evening the West Indies have not chased well through the series. We knew if we got Gayle and Lara early we were on top.
Australia’s best game here? It is nice to play at a certain level in the final. The last two games have been pretty good displays. We have had to gut it out with the bat and then dominate in the field.
On the strategy: I was really happy batting first on that wicket. Lots of sides actually do like to bat second now. With the supersub and power plays that came in 12 to 15 months ago, it is there for sides to bat second and stack their batting up. We have stuck to what we think works for us, and that is to bat first and put a good total on the board.
We haven’t chased for a while, but I don’t think that will hinder us. If you follow some things that are said in the dressing room before you go out in the field it doesn’t matter if you are setting a target or chasing.
On the Champions Trophy: That’s the one that we would love to win. It is the second biggest one-day tournament that we play and it has eluded Australia, we have been knocked out in the semifinals the last two times. I think we have the squad and the players to challenge seriously this time. We have played some good cricket in Indian conditions before so we can go there now with a bit of confidence.
On the CT squad: We are pretty close. I expect there wouldn’t be too much changes to the one we put up tonight.
On areas to improve before the World Cup: You have to fine-tune your skills to perfection going into that tournament. Coming here after not playing for months it is pretty fair to say none of us had our skills at the level to play our best cricket. But we knew that. We knew that we had to get a few games to get into a tempo.
On Martyn: I thought he played very well today on a difficult wicket. Damien went in and hit everything off the middle. In the role he played today, it was important to go in and spend a little time and build a partnership. It will do his confidence a lot of good as well.
On McGrath: He still has got a few things to work on I think. If you sat down and spoke to him he probably wouldn’t be jumping up and down about his bowling.
