Kapil consoles Sreesanth

New Delhi, Sept. 4: Paceman S. Sreesanth on Monday received some encouraging words from fast bowling great Kapil Dev who asked the bowler not to get disheartened by his omission from the Champions Trophy squad and work hard to win back his place in the national team.

The World Cup winning captain reminded Sreesanth that he was still very young and not being part of the squad for one or two tournaments should not worry him much.

"The selectors must have had the right reasons to drop him. If players like (Anil) Kumble and V.V.S. Laxman can be dropped, then anybody can be dropped," Kapil said.

"He (Sreesanth) is a young bowler. He should not lose heart and work hard to win back his place," Kapil said on the sidelines of a function to release a book India Beckons and Other Stories by AFP journalist C. Rajshekhar Rao here.

Asked about Sourav Ganguly’s exclusion, the former Indian skipper said he should have retired a year ago.

"In my opinion, he should have called it a day a year ago. But if he has enough strength left to come back, it’s good. He should stay positive," he said.

"But everyone is not Mohinder Amarnath who proved everybody wrong by making several comebacks." Kapil also said the current bunch of players in the Indian team were immensely talented and could win the World Cup for the country next year.

"Sometimes I feel ashamed when I see people like Dhoni — why could I not play the way they do it now. There is no dearth of talent. Only, sometimes it appears as if they fall short of commitment. Otherwise, they are a talented bunch and can win the World Cup," he said.
