Kuala Lumpur, Sept. 24: Australia’s heroes on Sunday, Brett Lee and Andrew Symonds, were elated with their efforts that added another trophy in the world champions’ cabinet.
Symonds, who set up the win by scoring a 59-ball 52, said he was undeterred by the chopping and changing of the Australian line-up. "I just try to play my role in the team. I usually bat at No.5 and bowl depending on situation and the pitch," he said on Sunday.
Captain Ricky Ponting was all praise for Symonds. "He is a pretty complete player isn’t he? He is one of the best fielders in the world as well, so you can put it on the top of his batting or bowling.
"He has been one of those players who can adapt to different situations, he can bat at three or four with Power Play coming into the game. It is handy to have versatility in your team.
"It is good to have players who can bat in any position, bowl at any time and field in any position," he said.
Lee, who triggered the West Indian collapse with a first-ball wicket, was beaming.
"It is always nice to start of the innings that way. The plan was to get that ball to swing back in but I never thought that in my wildest dreams that he would be out the first ball," he said of Chris Gayle.
On being named Man of the Series, Lee said: "I really enjoyed playing in this tournament. The coaching staff gave me the opportunity to take the first couple of games off and allowed me to work on my fitness. I got the opportunity to come out here and play the last two matches."
