BCCI seeks Webster’s services

Kolkata, Sept. 6: All going to plan, Team India are likely to get the service of noted sports psychologist, Dr Rudi Webster on a long-term basis, a top BCCI official indicated on Wednesday.

"Dr Webster had a short-term assignment with the Indian team during the tour of the West Indies.

"Going by the players’ reactions, it turned out to be helpful. With the ICC Champions Trophy and then the South African tour approaching, we are seriously considering of hiring him on a long-term basis," the official told this newspaper.

"We will sit with the team management after the triangular series in Malaysia and discuss various aspects including the appointment of Dr Webster," he added.

According to him, the management had already indicated its preference for the Caribbean psychologist and now the appointment depends on his availability and final negotiations.

Incidentally, coach Greg Chappell, who during his playing days has had "benefited immensely" after an interaction with Dr Webster, was instrumental in roping him in for his wards.

Things, however, did not progress after the Caribbean tour. That period, however, was enough to make a positive impact on the players. S. Sreesanth for example, found his one-on-one with the sports psychologist "very rewarding".

Dr Webster has a clientele which includes, apart from several top cricketers, the likes of Greg Norman. Meanwhile, the board is not very concerned about the recent controversy relating to the players’ individual rights to endorsements.

"It will be sorted out," the official asserted.

However, the board is unlikely to allow the contracted players to write columns when the contract will be reviewed and renewed after October 31.

"My personal opinion is, if a player writes about team composition, performance and other internal matters, it might adversely affect the entire team."

That about sums up the mood of the BCCI.
