New Delhi, Sept. 2: Indian vice-captain Virender Sehwag said it did not matter to him whether he opened the innings or batted in the middle order.
"I prefer to play for India. That is more important," he said on Saturday.
Sehwag started his career as a middle order batsman but made a smooth transition into an opener after earning the India cap.
In both Tests and one-dayers, he has played most of his matches as an opener, at which slot he has scored 4130 runs at an average of 34.13 in the shorter version and 3727 runs at 54.01 in the longer version.
"We tried Rahul out as opener keeping in mind the World Cup. It will change depending on the situation," he said. "If we are chasing big targets I might open and if we bat first Rahul might open. We are trying different combinations to see who is comfortable at what position so that in case there is an injury we have somebody to step in." Sehwag also justified the novel methods of training being devised by the support staff.
