This is not a war: Younis

Special Correspondent

Centurion, Sept. 25: "We are not fighting. This is not a war," declared Pakistan captain Younis Khan on the eve of their Group A 2009 Champions Trophy match against India at the SuperSport Park here on Saturday.

Younis is aware that his team have a poor record against their neighbours and great rivals, but insisted that it would be "just another game" for them. "This is not a revenge match. We are looking at it as a normal match, but with both nations, it is sometimes all about the pressure."

Even as his players were going through their final drills for the morrow, Younis agreed that despite all attempts to downplay clashes with India, intensity crept in anyway. "Sometimes you put too much pressure on yourself and collapse. We need a good win because our record against India in ICC tournaments is not good as we have won only once against them."

Younis felt the absence of Yuvraj Singh and Virender Sehwag in particular would put pressure on Sachin Tendulkar. "He is not a djinn (a genie). There is no fear. I feel happy when he scores. He is good to watch and we can learn a lot. But I think there will be more pressure on Sachin than us because he will be missing two frontline batsmen.

"We will also miss watching Sehwag and Yuvi because they are such fantastic players. No matter who wins or loses, cricket should win. Not only India, we need good wins against Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka.

"In the last couple of months, we have played good cricket but were a disappointment in Sri Lanka," he added, The batsman — returning from a fractured right-hand little finger — said he would have preferred to give the injury a little more time. "It would have been better to wait a couple of more games to face India. It is a fracture and will take four weeks to repair but if I can do something memorable tomorrow, score a ton … that is the big picture.

"I’ll be playing with pain. I am not 100 per cent fit, fielding will be a problem. I haven’t taken injections yet, but I might," Younis said.
