England upset SL applecart

Johannesburg, Sept. 26: England upset a raft of calculations in their first Group B match of the 2009 Champions Trophy at the Wanderers, stunning early leaders Sri Lanka by a healthy six-wicket margin here on Friday. Andrew Strauss’ side now top the group and one more win will in all likelihood see them into the semi-finals.

Eoin Morgan was England’s man of the hour with a calm and collected 62 not out after Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah had provided the early thrust in England’s chase of 213 to win. Morgan (62 not out, 83b, 7x4) and Matthew Prior (28 not out, 27b, 3x4) saw their side home with an unbeaten partnership of 55 runs for the fifth wicket.

Sri Lanka had earlier recovered from a disastrous 17/4 on a lively Wanderers track to total 212 in 47.3 overs thanks largely to lower order efforts from Thilan Kandamby (53), Angelo Mathews (52) and Thilan Samaraweera (30).

England started poorly with Strauss and Joe Denly back in the pavilion by the eighth over but Owais Shah joined Collingwood in a stabilising 63-run association for the third wicket in the course of which the latter blasted his way to a 51-ball 46 (5x4, 3x6) to set things up nicely for the rest. More than the runs, Collingwood and Shah neutralised the twin threat of Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan, who struggled for purchase on the unforgiving Wanderers pitch.

Scores: Sri Lanka 212 in 47.3 overs (Kandamby 53, Anderson 3/20) lost to England 213/4 in 45 overs (Morgan 62 n.o., Collingwood 46, Shah 44; Kulasekera 2/42)
