We are still hungry: Younis

AGE CORRESPONDENT

Centurion, Sept. 27: Pakistan captain Younis Khan was visibly happy and relaxed after his men pulled off a 54-run victory over India in their Group A league game of the 2009 Champions Trophy at the SuperSport Park here on Saturday. He, however, added that while they were here to win the tournament, these were still early days.

Shoaib Malik (128) and Mohammad Yousuf came together in a Champions Trophy record 206-run stand for any wicket that took Pakistan to 302/9, in reply to which the Indians were bowled out for 248.

Said Younis, "Actually, it’s still too early to say," he said of winning the tournament. "We are looking forward to the Australia game.

"We just wanted to make sure this time that we don’t rely on other results. We want to go through clean. It’s my wish but for now we will worry about the Australia match.

"It was a professional performance. It was a good toss to win. In the conditions, I thought that 260 or 270 (would be good enough) because, under lights, it is not easy to chase.

"We had a good start. Fantastic knocks from Yousuf and Malik. I thought we would reach 320 in the end but we didn’t hit too many runs in the last powerplay.

"The boys were very keen. We are still hungry. If we can defeat Australia in the next game, it would be nice."

Added man of the match Malik, "The hundred was important but what is more important is when the team wins.

"That’s what makes me happy and right now I am very happy because we won this match. I just want to carry my form now and I want to score more runs for the team."

"When I started, I just kept one thing in my mind; to stay at the wicket. It wasn’t an easy wicket as the ball was not coming to the bat, so I blocked and blocked. Then they started to bowl short and I was able to get runs to backward point quite easily. When we were about 200, there we decided that 300 is a possibility. We succeeded," Malik added.
