Johannesburg, Sept. 21: Kumar Sangakkara is quite pleased to let teams like India, Australia and hosts South Africa hog the spotlight, going into the opening match of the 2009 ICC Champions Trophy at Centurion near here on Tuesday. Denied a tournament victory by the red-hot Indians in Colombo last week, he said the islanders were content to "fly under the radar" at this short and sharp event.
"We know South Africa are a good side," he said in Centurion on Monday. "Our way of looking at it is a game is a game. It doesn’t matter who the opposition are. South Africa have got a major tournament to kick off in front of their home fans.
"The pressure is on them more than us. We’ve got to just go there and face whatever South Africa have to offer."
Sangakkara is sanguine about their prospects in the opener. "We are just trying to play the best we can. We have beaten them (South Africa) in World Cups, in South Africa as well. We’ve beaten them comprehensively in the sub-continent over the years and especially in the last two years or so."
He admitted their preparations had not been on the best sort. "The team’s form is quite good, but our track record in warm-up games is awful really. Yet, for some reason we seem to be lifting ourselves up in the tournament games. Everyone is batting and bowling really well.
"We’ve been working on our fielding, which has been a bit of a concern over the last few months. But come tomorrow, everyone is raring to go."
