Ponting exudes confidence

SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

Johannesburg, Sept. 23: Australia skipper Ricky Ponting says he is here to break a Champions Trophy jinx — that of a team winning this title a second time. Each of the past champions have been unable to pull off a repeat — starting off with South Africa back in 1998 — but Ponting is determined to change that little bit of history.

Thrice winners of the World Cup in a row, Australia last won the Champions Trophy in 2006 in Mumbai and are the defending champion as the 2008 edition of the event scheduled in Pakistan was called off for security reasons. For the pugnacious Aussie leader, that is motivation enough to go for the double.

"This certainly won’t be just another tournament for us," said Ponting here on Wednesday.

"We have been on the road for a long time but this is the second biggest one-day tournament you play for your country.

"We have had an eye on this tournament for the last couple of weeks. Since the Ashes series it’s been about getting things on track for here. It shouldn’t be too difficult for us to adapt."
