Viru aims to be fit for Australia series

AGE CORRESPONDENT

Mumbai, Sept. 26: Virender Sehwag, who is nursing an injured shoulder which has kept him out of the on-going Champions Trophy, is aiming to be fully fit before the ODI series against Australia at home in November.

Sehwag, who has been named captain of Rest of India for the Irani Cup, will return to action during the season opener beginning next month.

"I am not yet fit for international cricket as I cannot throw the ball from the boundary line. But I would be fully fit for the series against Australia (beginning from October 25). But for being selected I need to perform at the domestic level," said the dashing opener.

Selection committee chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who was also present during the promotional event, was asked if any changes were needed in the 50-over format and he said, "I don’t think that we need to worry about it at all. It will survive as all the three forms of the game Tests, ODI and Twenty 20 are spaced out well. There is no cause of concern for the format and when ODIs are played with the right spirit it will surely be followed."

Srikkanth then said the idea behind asking Sehwag to lead the Rest of India squad was to help him get back into groove — both the mental and physical frame of mind — before he got back to playing international matches.

Talk then veered to Sehwag’s comments on captaincy and the flamboyant batsman repeated that he had been misquoted.

"I never said that I don’t want captaincy. I said that I do not want to be the vice-captain of the Indian team and asked to groom youngsters who can assist M.S. Dhoni. And as far as stepping down as captain of the IPL team Delhi Daredevils is concerned, I think that I tried for two years but luck was not on my side. Gambhir is a good cricketer and has good brains. Delhi has won the Ranji Trophy under his captaincy," added Sehwag.

Sehwag then said the Champions League T20 and IPL were good formats and provided youngsters a platform to perform
