Ahmedabad, Oct. 7: Though defending champions West Indies hold a clear edge over a young Zimbabwe side in their Champions Trophy qualifier here, Windies skipper Brain Lara is in no mood to take chances.
"We cannot take them lightly. They have improved as a team. I am sure if they play more matches, they will prove themselves again. All the teams want to qualify and will try their best," said Lara, who holds a career individual record of 400 runs in Test cricket.
The southpaw, who has scored more than 20,000 runs in international cricket, hinted that the team may go with an extra batsman on Sunday.
"We haven’t decided on our XI, but there is a possibility of an extra batsman for Sunday’s match. I do not want to take any chance because I have seen their performance during the recent West Indies tour," said Lara.
Lara also expressed a desire to play a Test match at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens before he retired from international cricket.
"My dream is to play a Test at the Eden Gardens. Hopefully I can last that long. They say Lord’s is the home of cricket but I think in terms of the actual game India is the home of cricket. I hope to play in a triangular series in January," he said.
He is looking forward to Indian pitches as he feels that spectators here respect teams who do well. "Unfortunately the last time the West Indies came here I was not well and I couldn’t make the tour. The passion for cricket in India is more than any other part of the world. The spectators are passionate not only for the Indian team but also for all other teams who play well."
Lara refused to draw comparisons between his current bowling attack and the old breed of fast bowlers.
"I’m not going to compare them, these guys are hard working and confident. Those bowlers proved themselves and now it is time for these youngsters to do so. All fast bowlers have shown sign of improvement and I still hope one day they will prove what they are capable of," he said.
