Expect fireworks in RCB-Delhi clash

Sahan Bidappa

Bengaluru, Oct. 16: Of the lot, the Royal Challengers Bangalore were perhaps the most relaxed unit among the teams in League B, on Friday.

Up against the Delhi Daredevils in their second league game of the Champions League T20, there wasn’t much of cricketing activity in the RCB camp as they resorted to football and fitness drills instead.

After being humbled by the Victoria Bushrangers on Thursday, Anil Kumble’s men realise that even a win against the Daredevils on Saturday will not be enough to take them into the semifinals, as their fate now depends on other results in their group.

In the opposition camp, the Daredevils quickly slipped into cricketing gear after opting for practice under lights. For Gautam Gambhir’s side, the formula is simple: win both their matches, against RCB, and the Cape Cobras at home on Monday.

On the other hand, if the Cobras lose to Victoria in Saturday’s first match, it will boost RCB’s chances of a passage into the last four. For that, the home team will have to get past the Daredevils and hope that their rivals down the Cobras to make it a three-way tie for the second semis spot. In that scenario, all three teams will end up with two points each bringing the net run rate into equation.

As complicated it is, RCB did not spend much time getting into the mathematics of qualification and instead had a fun game before the important fixture.

However, for RCB, it will also be matter of pride in front of their home crowd, who are expected to throng the venue in anticipation of a Diwali dhamaka. After the drubbing at the hands of Victoria, the Royal Challengers will have a point to prove, even if they are out of the competition by the time Kumble walks out for the toss.

They have been largely inconsistent in the tournament, battling like millionaires in one game before going down without a whimper. On Saturday, they have to be on guard against a side who have one of the strongest batting line-ups in the tournament with the likes of Virender Sehwag, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Gambhir waiting to explode.

To back their batsmen, the Delhi side have sharpness and accuracy in their bowling attack led by the evergreen Aussie veteran Glenn McGrath and the equally dangerous Dirk Nannes, a combination that can demolish a side in no time.

For Kumble, the problems within the team could give him a headache. Jacques Kallis’ place in the side is under debate, but as it showed against Victoria, the South African’s absence can prove costly. Kallis didn’t play due to a side strain and it is more than likely that the all-rounder will not risk himself against the Daredevils unless the Cobras lose to Victoria.

The other key factor would be the pitch, which has lost its freshness and has played a lot slower.
