Delhi go out with a bang

New Delhi, Oct. 19: The final League B match of the Champions League T20 between the Delhi Daredevils and the Cape Cobras at the Ferozeshah Kotla had one last sting in the trail, even if it was a mere formality.

While the Daredevils had crashed out of the tournament after their eight-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday night, the Cobras had already booked their semifinal berth.

Delhiites still came in great numbers on Monday night, hoping to see another explosive innings by Virender Sehwag. What they got in return was the sight of Sehwag and pace legend Glenn McGrath carrying drinks for the likes of Yogesh Nagar and Pradeep Sangwan.

If it hadn’t been for low and slow Kotla track, the crowd would have gone home disappointed. A hostile opening burst by Dirk Nannes (3/19) followed by an impressive spell of leg-spin bowling by Amit Mishra (2/19) helped the Daredevils bow out on a happy note with a 30-run win their final match.

The Delhi side dismissed the Cobras for a paltry 84 in 18.3 overs after tallying just 114/6 in 20 overs, having elected to bat first. The South Africans now head for Hyderabad to take on Trinidad & Tobago in the second semifinal on Thursday after the Victoria Bushrangers topped League B. Meanwhile, the Bushrangers will face New South Wales Blues in an all-Australian semifinal at the Kotla here on Wednesday.

Chasing 115 to win, the Cobras were off to the worst possible start with the off-colour Herschelle Gibbs departing for a first-ball duck. Tillakaratne Dilshan (2/16) opened with both bat and ball and made up for his single-run dismissal. Nannes, at the other end, generated disconcerting and unexpected pace to strike crucial blows, including the wicket of Cobras skipper Andrew Puttick. Mishra followed up on Nannes’ fine start to halt the Cobras.

After Henry David departed for 29-ball 22, the Cobras were banking to J.P. Duminy to carry the side home.

The rest of the Cobras batsmen who followed Duminy, failed to push the scoring along after the side were reduced to 57/5 in the 11th over. Nannes returned to pick up a couple of wickets in his last over and hastened Cobras’ end. In his last over — the 16th of the innings — he bowled out Ryan Canning (3) and Claude Henderson off the next ball with a searing yorker to swing the match decisively for the Daredevils.

Earlier, skipper Gautam Gambhir and Dilshan and both were back in the pavilion before the spectators had settled down in their seats.

Manoj Tewari (19, 21b, 1x4) struggled to get the ball off the square and runs came in a trickle. Dinesh Karthik (23, 24b, 3x4) tried his best to bring some life into the match, smashing Kleinveldt for three successive boundaries. It was Owais Shah’s top-score of an unbeaten 39 off 38 balls with two boundaries and a six (the only one of the Delhi innings) which gave some respectability to the Delhi total.

Scores: Delhi Daredevils 114/6 in 20 ovs (Shah 39 n.o., Karthik 23; Kleinveldt 2/31, Ontong 2/8) bt Cape Cobras 84 in 18.3 overs (Davids 22, Duminy 14; Nannes 3/19, Mishra 2/19, Dilshan 2/16, Nagar 2/10) by 30 runs
