New Delhi, Oct. 30: Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh is India’s most experienced ODI bowler with 197 games under his belt. After more than a decade of international cricket, Harbhajan still hasn’t fulfilled the immense promise he showed in the 2001-02 Test series against Australia.
In 2009, Bhajji has taken only 19 wickets in 17 ODIs so far at an average of 35.47, which includes a five-wicket haul in the tri-series final in Sri Lanka. The worrying thing for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and the team management is that the Punjab off-spinner is also leaking runs at an expensive 5.4 runs per over in every match.
In the two matches of the series, Harbhajan just has two wickets — one in each match — giving away 57 and 62 runs at Baroda and Nagpur respectively. On Friday, skipper Dhoni and coach Gary Kirsten spent a lot of time working with the offie on his bowling.
"One thing is for sure, he (Harbhajan) is not bowling at this best. The kind of individual and the player he is, he loves challenges. We are waiting because it is just about one game where he will bounce back and get us those wickets that we really need during those middle overs," Dhoni said after a net session on Friday.
"We are not too worried about these experienced guys, who have spent enough time at the international level," he added.
Dhoni denied that special attention was being paid to Bhajji during the practice session. "The session was quite normal, we do it every day. It is just that after a long time, we were doing single-wicket practice," the skipper said.
Meanwhile, on the possibility of playing two spinners on the Kotla pitch, Dhoni said, "It is one thought that is on our mind but at the same time we have Harbhajan, Ravindra Jadeja is there, Yuvraj and Raina can also bowl. We’ll see what team combination is suitable and select the team accordingly."
Sachin Tendulkar has also had a modest start to the series but Dhoni was not contemplating any changes to the opening combination.
"You always expect a big score from Sachin and more often than not he delivers. If he can get 17,000 runs in this game then there cannot be anything better for the team. He is one batsman who if he stays at the crease helps and guides the batsmen at the other end, so we get runs from both ends," Dhoni said.
Finally, the Indian skipper refused to write off Australia in the ODI series, saying, "I don’t think they (Australia) are a weak side; they are still good. They have good batsmen at the top, in the middle order they have Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey."
"They have got experienced players who can really make a difference at this level. I would not consider them weak in any aspect."
