Victorians walloped, but qualify on points

Devadyuti Das

New Delhi, Oct. 13: The Ferozeshah Kotla wicket might not have produced the deluge of boundaries that spectators expect of a Twenty20 match, but it did liven up the race for a spot in the next round of the Champions League Twenty20.

The sluggish nature of the pitch has curtailed the strokeplay of every batsman in the tournament, barring Virender Sehwag and Dinesh Karthik on Sunday night, and it was no different on Tuesday. The final Group D tie between Victoria Bushrangers and Wayamba Elevens was once again a low-scoring affair, though the former did just enough to qualify for the league stages of the tournament.

In spite of winning the match by 15 runs, Wayamba had to catch an early flight home out of India. Chasing 118 to win, the Victorians needed to score 83 to qualify for the next stage after the Delhi Daredevils had secured their berth with a 50-run win over the Lankan side on Sunday night.

The Bushrangers ended up with just 103/4 but still managed to progress with a net run-rate of 0.136, ahead of Wayamba’s -0.875 after all three Group D teams finished with two points each.

Wayamba would have fancied their chances after reducing the Aussies to 70/4 in the 17th over but all-rounder Andrew McDonald smashed three fours and a six in the 18th over off leg-spinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi to guide his team into the next stage.

Brad Hodge remained unbeaten 44 (52b, 2x4, 1x6) while the red-haired McDonald scored a breezy 27 off 16 balls with four fours and a six. Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath was the most economical bowler for the Lankan side, giving away 10 runs from his four overs while Ajantha Mendis went for only 21 runs and picked up the wicket of Victoria skipper Cameron White in his quota of overs.

Earlier, Wayamba capitulated after a promising start, putting up 118/9 in their allotted overs. After getting off on the wrong foot, with opener Mahela Udawatte (1) falling leg-before to Peter Siddle in the second over, the Lankans rallied with a second wicket stand between Jeevantha Kulatunga and Michael Vandort.

Scores: Wayamba Elevens 118/9 in 20 overs (Michael Vandort 42, Jeevanths Kulatunga 41; Shane Harwood 3/14, Clint McKay 2/24) bt Victoria Bushrangers 103/4 in 20 overs (Brad Hodge 44 n.o.; Chanaka Welegedara 2/18)
