New Delhi, Oct. 12: Group B minnows the Sussex Sharks and Diamond Eagles face off in a must-win Champions League T20 tie at the Ferozeshah Kotla on Tuesday. After comprehensive losses at the hands of the New South Wales Blues, the Englishmen and South Africans will battle to decide who progresses into the league stages of the tournament.
The Sharks were hampered by the loss of skipper Michael Yardy for Sunday’s match but the all-rounder took full part in the training session at the Kotla on Monday afternoon and looks set to make a comeback for the crucial tie. The English T20 Cup champions also received a significant boost by the arrival of all-rounder Luke Wright on Monday.
Wright, had been laid low by a virus since the Champions Trophy and the management hopes that the all-rounder will be fit for Tuesday’s match. "Yardy took part in a full practice session at the Kotla here on this afternoon and we are hoping he’ll be in top shape for tomorrow’s match. Meanwhile, Wright has flown into town today and it is a big boost for the side ahead of our crucial match against the Eagles," the Sharks’ manager Dave Brooks told this newspaper on Monday.
The Eagles were made to look very ordinary in their opening match of the tournament. The South African side’s top-order crumbled without a fight in face of sustained hostility from the NSW pacemen. Skipper Boeta Dippenaar will need to lead by example and will require support from batsmen like Morne van Wyk if they harbour any hopes of qualifying for the next round.
The Sussex batsmen also struggled on the sluggish Kotla surface. While the Blues paced their innings superbly for a final onslaught, the Sharks were unable to push the scoring along. The failure of all-rounder Yasir Arafat and Piyush Chawla cruelly exposed the side.
But the return of Yardy and Wright could provide some much needed impetus to the team.
The battle of two well-matched teams should provide a thrilling conclusion to the Group B ties.
