Mumbai, Oct. 21: A number of ideas have been floated of late by cricketers to make one-day game more popular. Australia skipper Ricky Ponting suggests that there should be a points system to keep a contest alive and keep the spectators involved. He is also of the opinion that a seven-match one-day series is a bit too long.
"I have thought long and hard over the one-day game in the last few years. I think the 50-over game has been put under a lot of pressure with the popularity of Twenty20 cricket. But playing a seven-match series against one side in a matter of couple of weeks it is really hard especially when the series gets over early.
"It is hard to maintain your focus, especially knowing that there is another big series at the end of that so you look to rotate players, leave some out of guys.
"My feeling is that if we are interested in keeping the 50-over game as a great spectacle, keep people around the world watching and players interested in playing it then there must be a point system riding on it which means every game will have some amount of meaning and people would have something to watch for," he said. Ponting feels low scoring matches are especially boring to watch, and that there should be a bonus point make it more exciting.
