Kolkata, Oct. 19: Bengal all-rounder Avik Chowdhury’s condition has improved only to a small extent, after he was admitted to the Ruby General Hospital here following his injury in a car accident on Sunday. Although there is no bleeding as such, the 24-year-old is still on the ventilator.
"At present, the clinical parameters are better. Avik’s blood pressure and oxygen saturation too has improved and there hasn’t been any bleeding as such," hospital CEO S.B. Purakayastha told this newspaper on Monday.
"However, the paralysis in his lower limbs is still there. So, for at least another two to three days, he needs to remain on the ventilator. We can’t say that he’s out of danger."
On Sunday, Avik’s car rammed into a divider while trying to avoid a collision. After being rushed to the hospital, it was found that he had suffered serious spinal injuries and a lung hemorrhage that left the entire lower portion of his body paralysed.
Hospital sources added that Avik was not in a position to be operated upon. "There’s no question of surgery as long as he’s on the ventilator. But even then, given his present condition, saving his life is our main concern," said one.
