Hyderabad, Oct. 16: Former England opener Marcus Trescothick, who left the Somerset County Cricket Club team — the Sabres — midway through their Champions League Twenty20 campaign, cited stress before he left for home, according to the team management.
Somerset team director Brian Rose refused to divulge further details. "I can’t give you any details about his (Trescothick’s) illness. There was recurrence of the symptoms which he had before. He made an honest confession to me stating ‘I couldn’t give my 100 per cent in the (two) matches I played — but only 50 to 60 per cent.’
"He felt in such an intense competition you have to give more than 100 per cent but he was no way near," Rose told a media conference on Friday.
"The team members and the management understand that and we respect his decision. He made a great effort to come down all the way here and be a part of this prestigious event.
"Of course it’s a huge loss to our side — he’s a great player. But we can’t help it. He tried his best to be here. He was fine when we came here. But it all happened suddenly. He made a quick decision and we stood by him," Rose added.
Asked if the team had sought a replacement, Rose said, "We are happy with the squad we have. The young guys will get an opportunity in such a big game, which is also a good thing."
