New Delhi, Oct. 13: In a ‘winner-take-all’ Champions League T20 Group B tie, South Africa’s Diamond Eagles shaded the Sussex Sharks via a ‘super over’ after the match ended in a tie at the Kotla here on Tuesday night to enter the super league stage of the competition.
Chasing a modest 120 to win, opener Rilee Roussouw smashed 65 off 62 deliveries to set the platform for an Eagles’ win. However, the most enthralling phase of the day began in the penultimate over of the match with the dismissal of Roussouw by off-spinner Rory Hamilton-Brown with the Eagles still needing 14 to win off eight balls.
It came down to the final over, with the Eagles 12 away from the win. Ryan McLaren inside-edged Yasir Arafat past the keeper to bring down the equation to five off two balls, then played out a dot ball before smashing a four off the final delivery to tie the score at 119/4.
Thereafter, the 23-year-old C.J. de Villiers took just two deliveries to settle the issue in the ‘super over’. After the Eagles had set a target of 10 runs to win the match, Dwayne Smith and Hamilton-Brown were clean bowled off the first two balls of their ‘super over’ to end the Sharks’ dreams.
Earlier, the Sharks stuttered their way to 119/7 after winning the toss and deciding to bat. They got off to a flyer with star all-rounder Luke Wright, who flew into Delhi only on Monday, smashing 19 off 12 balls with a couple of big sixes. But Wright’s dismissal — clean bowled by de Villiers — brought the Sharks’ progress to a grinding halt.
Scores: Sussex Sharks 119/7 in 20 overs (J. Gatting 25; D du Preez 2/23, C de Villiers 2/20) lost to Diamond Eagles 119/4 in 20 overs (R. Rossouw 65; P. Chawla 2/17, R. Hamilton-Brown 2/15) by Super Over
