Mumbai, Nov. 6: Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar on Monday expressed disappointment on India’s dismal show at the ICC Champions Trophy. The Mumbai batsman, however, was positive about the team’s chances for the upcoming South Africa tour.
"The Champions Trophy was surely disappointing. We could have definitely put up a much better show. As a team, we have to look at the positive aspects heading into the South African tour," said Tendulkar at a press meet in the city here.
Tendulkar on the occasion, indirectly lashed out at the behaviour of Australian captain Ricky Ponting and his teammates at the prize distribution ceremony after the ICC Champions Trophy final.
Eager to take hold of the trophy and pose for the cameras with his teammates, Ponting was seen tapping BCCI president Sharad Pawar on the shoulder as a gesture to leave the stage.
Tendulkar said that he had heard about the incident from others as he did not himself watch it because he was travelling. He, however, termed it an unpleasant experience and an "uncalled for" behaviour against a person who was dear to all the cricketers.
"I wasn’t watching the proceedings because I was travelling, but from what I heard (from others) it was an unpleasant experience which was uncalled for (action)," the ace batsman told reporters.
"Firstly, it should not have happened. It’s important to show respect to the person who is so dear to the cricketers and is involved with cricket. So it’s good that we avoid such incidents," he said further in this regard.
On the tournament, Tendulkar said: "There is no point in dwelling about what happened in the Champions Trophy. We just need to stick together as we have done earlier. Before the 2003 World Cup in South Africa, we did not had a good tour of New Zealand, however, but we managed to reach the final of the World Cup," he said.
On the nature of wicket, Tendulkar said that domestic matches should be played on pitches like the ones used in the tournament. "The wicket at Mohali was a good sporting track. We need such type of wickets in domestic cricket too. The match against the West Indies at Ahmedabad was a close one. Had we managed ten more runs, it would have been a different story altogether."
